Synopsis

One day an old, childless bamboo cutter called Taketori no Okina ( 竹取翁, “the Old Man who Harvests Bamboo”) finds a girl in a shining, mysterious stalk of bamboo. The girl is only the size of a finger. He rejoices to find such a beautiful girl and takes her home. The old bamboo cutter and his wife decide to take Kaguya-hime, a name she’ll only receive later, as their child. When Kaguya grows up, five men from prestigious families propose to her.
